Watching the NFL versus the MLB
Imagine placing two flat screen plasma TV's side by side in your
living room smack dab in front of your couch. You've got beer,
snacks a-plenty and fresh batteries in your clicker.
One TV has an NFL game on and the other has a Major League
Baseball game and they both start at the same time.
Besides this being many sports fans' idea of hog heaven and even
better than clicking back and forth between games with only one
TV, it's fun to watch the differences between these two pro
sports. Watching ...Read the rest of this entry »
From Bare Bones to Big Bucks-The Evolution of American Football
By the end of October, baseball fans pack up the party with the
boys of summer, and prepare for the cold months ahead with a
long list of hard-hitting heavyweights ready to take the field
as the Sunday afternoon, Monday night, and holiday highlight for
the winter months. But, football as we know it today started as
a bare bones game, evolving through continents, colleges and
contracts over the years.
Like most things, football can be traced back to the ancient
Greeks and Romans, who played a ...Read the rest of this entry »
The Jack LaLanne Principle
A couple of weeks ago a number of football players from the
football team the Minnesota Vikings were revealed to have been
part of a cruise on Lake Minnetonka where great quantities of
alcohol were consumed and some of the players had sex with
prostitutes. Or maybe it was all of them. In response, the front
office has published a code of conduct for them, because
apparently the players didn't know that getting drunk and having
sex with prostitutes is considered wrong. Thank God it's in
writing, ...Read the rest of this entry »
Myths of Pool
b>The Dominant Eye
Everybody thinks you need to put your cue under your dominant
eye or under your chin. But where does Keith McCready and Earl
Strickland fit in then? If this were the case, I guess they
might need to give back their world championships. Neither Keith
nor Earl hold their cues underneath their "dominant eye." Keith
and Earl, of course, are not the only players who hold their cue
in a place other than their "dominant eye," or chin. The
dominant eye is only good for the length of ...Read the rest of this entry »
I Must Get The Newspaper
I Must Get The Newspaper
Every day when I wake up one of the first items that creeps into
my head is getting the newspaper. I have got to get the paper. I
have operated this way for over 40 years. The paper gets me in
the know. More so than the internet I guess it might be because
I can touch it or feel it.
I confess - I have to see the sports pages. It's out in the
open. I admit it. There is something missing for me if I do not
get to see the sports pages.
Who hit home runs? Who got the ...Read the rest of this entry »
World Series In Russia - Huh? What?
As we watch the Astros choke or White Sox perform valiantly
depending on your point of view, I am reminded of my baseball
experience in Russia.
World Series
I always find it interesting that most of our professional
sports call the championship round the World Series or some
similar variation. Clearly, there are games being played
elsewhere, so how can it be the world championship? With
baseball, the arrivals of Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners
and Tadahito Iguchi of the White Sox ...Read the rest of this entry »
A Woman's True Confession
Football season is here, which means that for the next several
weeks - 90% of the male population of the US will spend an
enormous amount of their "free time" watching games on TV (the
bigger the screen, the better), attending football games
(Friday=high school, Saturday= college, Sunday & Monday=Pro),
and of course every day of the week they will be moaning,
groaning or crowing about their Fantasy League, uh, excuse me,
in most cases - make that Fantasy Leagues... because it seems
you can't ...Read the rest of this entry »
Advantages of Martial Arts for Kids
Martial arts are still considered a rather controversial
subject, and the unfortunate misconception that they can promote
violence is still present. However, just a little research will
show any parent that martial arts promote the exact opposite of
violence: they teach self control, balance and a healthy
physical and mental state.
When you enroll your kid in a martial arts class you have to
consider his or her options as well. If having the child learn
martial arts is only your goal, and your ...Read the rest of this entry »
Best of MLB's Ballparks
When baseball fans feel that a ballpark is a shrine rather than
just a place to watch a baseball game, then there must be
something about the park that makes it so great. Whether it's
the view, the enthusiasm, or the game itself, not many
activities beat watching an intense game at a place you love. If
you want to watch a game where the prices are good and the
crowds are even better than these are the parks for you.
First is Miller Park in Milwaukee. With an average ticket price
of just ...Read the rest of this entry »
Changing Landscape of the NHL
Changing Landscape of the NHL
The changing face of the NHL is very prominent as the first
regular season play begins for the 2005-2006 season. Big named
players have left big named teams for the previously has-been
doorstops of the NHL. It is amazing that sports like baseball
have not seen the light, and it is unfortunate that hockey had
to learn this lesson the very hard way.
We now have players like Paul Kariya playing in a market where
there are only 1.2 million people. For Kariya, though, ...Read the rest of this entry »
Home Run Statistics - Do You Like 'Em
Home Run Statistics - Going going gone. The home run. One of
sports grandest sights. Whether it is a line drive that barely
clears the wall or a pop up that glances off the foul pole. Or
if it's a shot that goes 40 rows back. It is still a home run.
We love to see 'em. Here are some of the great home run
hitters. I have categorized these home run hitters in a
particular way that I thought you might like. These statistics
are up to and include the 2004 season.
Most 50 or more home run ...Read the rest of this entry »
NASCAR
In 1947, the sport of stock car racing was becoming extremely
popular and beginning to draw large crowds of spectators. More
drivers began taking an interest due to the increasing fan
popularity. Cohesiveness, however, did not exist as rules
differed from one racetrack to the next. Several tracks were
built to produce one big show at a county fair, or similar
event, in order to capitalize on the crowds of fans that were
beginning to form. Other tracks, however, were built more toward
handling ...Read the rest of this entry »
