Oakland NJ - A Great Town for Kids

Oakland NJ - A Great Town for Kids My children, my wife and I have been fortunate to have lived in the town of Oakland NJ, for the past 18 years. The commitment to kids sports programs, especially girls softball, I think would be hard to surpass by any other town this size. ( 14,000 - 15,000). I have seen many girls flourish in the Softball program, playing on traveling teams, and at the varsity level at our High School. Part of the success the girls have is due to the efforts of a handful ...

Why I'd Rather Be A Slugger

Why I'd Rather Be A Slugger During the last NLCS, I asked Brandon Backe of the Astros what the hardest thing was for him in making the conversion from outfielder to pitcher in the minors. He said it was "not playing every day." That is why I would rather be a slugger, to answer your question. I'd want my mind and body to be in every inning of every game. I wouldn't want to be one elbow injury away from a possible end of my career or a lost year. I listened to Nolan Ryan talk at the last ...

NBA Notes (March 23rd)

Could the NBA regular season end a couple of weeks earlier? Yes. The season now ends on April 20 and the playoffs begin April 23. If the regular season ended on April 6 it would fit nicely with hoopla that surrounds the NCAA's men's Final Four plus the NBA's playoffs could begin April 9. This maneuver would reduce the regular season from the current 82 games to 74. Would this provide for more meaningful late season games, and more inspired play? Absolutely. Approximately one-third of the league ...

Bo Sox Power

Bo Sox Power As a Yankee fan for over 40 years I have seen many Yankee comebacks. 1978 was a great year. After being down 14 games the Bronx Bombers stormed back to overtake the Red Sox in the one game playoff. Bucky Dent sure had his baseball fantasy. The 1958 Yanks. The team of Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra were down three games to one. They beat the Milwaukee Braves to redeem themselves for the previous year's World Series loss. The Braves happened to be the target for another Yankee comeback ...

3-Pointer by Gary Whittaker (Feb 15)

Point 1: Basketball's Mr. 3000 Lakers celebrate Bryant's return with a loss against the next great one. Hopefully Kobe, who was watching King James on the court for 41 minutes, was able to take enough notes to see that you don't need to be a veteran to be leader. Hopefully Kobe watched enough of King James to realize that you don't have to be surrounded by superstars to have your teammates play like they are. All you need is a player that not only achieves greatness, but that can help his ...

The Sport Of Goalball

How would you like to have a three-pound ball the size of a basketball fired at you at 50, 60 miles an hour, and you have to hurl your body in a diving attempt to stop it while blindfolded? This isn't some fraternity initiation prank. It's a real sport played by blind and visually impaired athletes all over the world. The game is called Goalball, and it's not for the fainthearted. In a recent article from the Herald Palladium (Michigan) newspaper, Nikki Buck of the U.S. National Goalball Team ...

Barone Drexel and Harris - My Mentors, Teachers and Coaches

My life was always about playing ball, mostly baseball as I grew up. Therefore, I was always at the playground on Chancellor Avenue. This was a hotbed for sports activity in the Weequahic section of Newark. From Monday through Saturday there were countless games taking place. Baseball on the dirt field and softball on the blacktop. Basketball games, and volley ball games were always being played. Mr Barone, Mr Drexel and Mr Harris oversaw the games that were played. Sometimes they played in ...

The Penalty Box

Nowhere can an example of the corrupt capitalistic society be found more perfectly than in this NHL labour dispute. This is essentially a battle between the Haves and the Have Mores, who are scratching and clawing each other over their share average man's money. As the regular man, we pay our money gladly for tickets, concessions and merchandise for our favourite sport teams as a diversion from the everyday life. For Canadians, are national pastime has been held hostage by 2 groups. The ...

Your golf swing is good enough

If you watch the Golf Channel or read any of the magazines and books on golf, it will be very hard for you to miss the basic theme that "There is a perfect swing and you will do the most for your game by trying to get it". Even when you watch a tournament on TV, you see the commentators participate in this conspiracy by showing us frame-by-frame analysis of the pro and critiquing his/her every move. Now, maybe we can give the TV guys a break because they are just trying for some ...

Pedro, Beltran, and the Mets as seen by one true Yankee Fan:

Pedro, Beltran, and the Mets as seen by one true Yankee Fan: It's the middle of the NFL playoffs, and what has grabbed the interest of many sports fans has been the off-season maneuvering and acquisitions of the Mets and Yankees. In the past, the sports media has hyped baseball trades, the big money contracts, and the long time rivalries which make the off-season so interesting, but never as intensely as this year in NY. First, Pedro Martinez, then, Carlos Beltran going to the Mets ...

3 - Pointer by Gary Whittaker

3-pointer by Gary Whittaker Point 1 - Red Sox Win! Red Sox Win! There will NOT be a bigger sporting event this year than the saga that was the 200 ALCS between the little Red Sox team defeating the big bad Yankees. The stories involve Pedro Martinez calling the whole damn Yankees as his "Daddy", to Mariano Rivera coming back to pitch in game 4 after 2 "shocking" deaths in his wife's family. From Schilling making baseball a MAN'S sport by pitching off a bleeding ankle, to the Red Sox making ...

What started it all - the History of Volleyball

By Rebecca Blain of http://www.everything -volleyball.com Surprisingly, one of the most well loved sports in the world is also relatively young. Despite the game's youth, it has gone through a wide variety of changes and evolution as a part of its rich history. Believe it or not, but at one time there wasn't Asics or Nike women's volleyball shoes or even volleyball uniforms for sale anywhere, let alone online! To fully understand and appreciate how much the game has changed and how much work ...

The Base Hit

The Base Hit © William A. Patsis 2004 Sometimes there is that rare moment that causes one to reflect on those matters that are deemed important and deflect those that are not. It is a very humbling experience but a nice feeling nevertheless. I had one of those moments. Spring time has many activities for kids. The most notable, or at least it was when I was young, is baseball. Moving into a new area and signing up Evan (10) and Dimitri (8) in the winter was originally intended to have them ...

The Art Of Playing Softball

In today's sports, softball is considered to be the most common sport that is able to accumulate approximately 56 million Americans who will vie for anything just to be able to play this well-loved game in a year. Before, softball was considered as a game only for women, but later on gained acceptance and was widely played by more players regardless of their respective genders. No Excuse For Not Exercising

For many people in today's busy world it's quite easy to come up with an excuse for not being in shape and exercising regularly. Some of the more common ones are "I'm too busy", "There aren't enough hours in a day", and "I'm so tired after work and taking care of the kids all day". However most of these are just that, excuses. This means that certain physiological issues must be considered when they are exercising. Get Stronger, Faster and Better by Training Right, Eating Well

Copyright 2005 Joey Atlas I rarely start an article with the conclusion at the beginning. But, for this specific topic I couldn't write it any other way. So, here it is. No magic pill, patented drink mix, sublingual tincture, trans-dermal patch, man made food bar, proprietary mineral blend, or secret capsule is capable of producing the results, or anything remotely close, that can be achieved through the proper strength and conditioning program combined with a smart, a realistic nutrition ...

Stretching 101

The two main purposes of stretching are prevention of injury caused by exercise or day-to-day activities and a faster rate of recovery from exercise. Stretching can also be used to improve posture and restore proper anatomical functionality. A regular stretching program will loosen muscle tissue, allowing an increased range of motion at the joints, which in turn helps prevent microtears at the muscle-tendon junction. Almost 90% of all injuries from muscle strain occur at the ...
